Piretti unveils new putters, Heavy Putter enjoys transatlantic acclaim and one professional takes the shorter path to success. Here’s the latest Putter Buzz on the PGA Tour and beyond:
1. The artisan putter industry continues to thrive, as evidenced by the recent launch of Piretti Fine Putters, which specializes in custom milled putters under the direction of co-owners Jon Sarley and Mike Johnson. Piretti’s initial two models are the Teramo PN, an Anser-style blade (pictured here), and the Teramo CS, a center-shafted blade, both of which are priced at $275. Custom grip, paint fill and length options are offered at the point of purchase. Sarley says that Piretti Golf is focused on the fundamentals of quality and performance. “We believe some other manufacturers have tried to out-think the stroke, which can be a bit daunting for the average player,” he says. “We’ve pared away the unnecessary gadgets and focused on superior materials and craftsmanship, and the response we’ve been getting from our customers has been very positive.”
2. Boccieri Golf continues to make a splash with its new Heavy Putter Deep Face (DF) series putters. President Stephen Boccieri recently traveled to the European Open in London at the request of several players, who wanted his input on custom fittings. According to the company: “Contributing to four top-10 finishes, including one victory and two runner-ups in the past four months on the PGA European Tour, the Heavy Putter has been adopted by several of the circuit’s leading money winners this season.” Heavy Putter also recently unveiled an infomercial that is now airing on the Golf Channel, and which can be viewed on the Heavy Putter web site. 3. Rife Putters announced that 30 players put a Rife putter into play during the recent Champions Tour’s Dicks Sporting Goods Open, outdistancing the nearest competitor by 14 putters. 4. As has been stated here at PutterZone.com many times before, there is no “standard” length in putters, despite the sheer dominance of 35- and 34-inch putters at most golf retail outlets. Phil Mickelson and Boo Weekley are among several PGA Tour pros who have been known to wield 33-inch putters (although Mickelson recently added length). Now comes word that Robert Garrigus is wielding a 28-inch (!) putter, with which recently shot a round of 65 to finish tied for 17 at the Buick Open. Garrigus is 5 feet, 11 inches tall. Golfweek reports that this putter is the shortest on the PGA Tour. Surely, 28 inches is too short for most golfers, but it just proves, once again, that putter fitting is highly personal.
